Scientific Preparation Courses

The purpose of the course is to create a consciousness about the main subjects and concepts of the field of Turkish Language and Literature. To this end, the students are introduced to the concepts of language and literature, the differences between oral and written cultures, the history of philological studies in the world and in Turkey, the development of Turkish language and literature, as well as the five main disciplines of the area (Ottoman-Turkish literature, Modern Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Language and Folk Literature)

The scripts of the Ottoman Turkish and transcription are introduced. The writing of Turkish vowels and consonants, letters that are not from Turkish origin, the inflexional suffix and derivational suffix in Turkish, the words whose grammar have been standardized, the introduction to Arabic and Persian elements in the Ottoman Turkish. Practices to read Ottoman Turkish texts from Ottoman script.

Aiming at the interpretation of texts, genres and characteristics of classical Turkish literature are introduced. Aruz prosody, metaphor, verbal and semantic arts are analyzed over sample texts.

The writers, original and translation texts of the Old Anatolian Turkish era. The characteristics of the era, studies on phonology and morphology. Reading and linguistic analysis of hand written texts.

The development of prose in Arabic and Persian sources. First examples in Anatolian region. The development of plain, medium and ornate prose. The explanation of the characteristics of prose genres and comparative studies on texts that are typical of various periods.

Creating an awareness on theoretical approaches to literature as well as the history and development of literary theories from the Poetics of Aristoteles in the ancient times, and the 19th-20th century approaches. Purely literary theories and the insight derived from other disciplines such as sociology, history, psychology are included. Theory of mimesis, social realism, Marxist aesthetics, new historicism, formalism, reception theory, intertextuality, structuralism and phenomenology are studied with a focus on their main concepts.

The history and main concepts of comparative literature; the schools of comparative literature and such controversial topics like the analogy of nation, national literature, mother tongue, transnational literary studies, terminology, theory and methodology). The comparison of folk literature and mythology as well as new approaches to comparative literature will also be discussed.

The general characteristics of Turkish Folk Literature texts, syllable prosody (hece vezni), general characteristics of Turkish Folk Literature in the course of history, Aruz prosody in Turkish Folk Literature. The interpretation of Turkish Folk Literature texts. 

The changes within the genres of Turkish Folk Literature through the course of history in various centuries. The study of emerging new genres of folk poetry, as a consequence of social change.

Defining Middle Turkish period; Interpretation of the history, culture and belief systems of Karakhanids and Khwarezms; Reading, analyzing and interpreting Kutadgu Bilig, Divanü Lügati’t Türk and Divan-ı Hikmet as Middle Turkish scope; Distinguishing the different aspects on phonetics, morphology and syntax knowledge of today's Turkish and Middle Turkish.
