This course aims to introduce translation and interpreting as a profession. Brief history of translation and interpreting. Discussion of the basic terms and concepts of translation, interpreting and translation studies. Basic level analysis and practice.

This course aims to develop the essential Turkish skills required for translation and interpreting purposes through analysis of Turkish texts and discussion of their style, content and function. Awareness of various text types will be enhanced through practice in essay writing and intralingual translation. 

This course aims to develop the listening and speaking skills required for effective oral communication using authentic audiovisual materials reflecting natural language use.

This course aims to introduce the key concepts and principles of translation-oriented text analysis and to enhance the relevant skills. Based on a hypothetical translation commission, source texts of various types will be analyzed with a special focus on the text, context, text type, text's function, intratextual and extratextual elements, discourse, parallel text, etc. and translation decisions will be discussed.

This course is an introduction to major types of interpreting such as onsight, bilateral, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. Practice in basic interpreting skills such as note-taking, summarizing and reformulation.

Translation of technical texts with emphasis on terminology, format, style and expression in the relevant field using Turkish and English parallel texts. In-class exercises and written assignments will be a part of the course work.
